Keeping Kwanzaa: A Haiku series

In reverence to the celebration of Kwanzaa and in thoughtfulness of one of my favorite legendary poets & healers Sonia Sanchez, whose wide-ranging development of new strategies within haiku continue to inspire me, I present ‘Keeping Kwanzaa: a haiku series’.

Today’s haiku format centers on the number 7.

In numerology, number 7 is associated with deep thinking, wisdom, and understanding and often symbolizes completion or wholeness, hence why Kwanzaa is observed for 7 days.

Written in 7-7-7 syllable structure, this haiku is inspired by the 1st principle of Kwanzaa: Umoja

Umoja, which means unity, emphasizes the importance of togetherness in the family and community, and is rooted in the African philosophy of collectivism

Centuries of hued mans dreams

Holding hands; Standing as one
