Kujichagulia

Keeping Kwanzaa: A Haiku Series

Today’s haiku format highlights the number 6.

In numerology, number 6 is known as the "Mother" of numbers because it represents unconditional love and the ability to support, nurture, and heal. It is a powerful force of compassion and empathy and symbolizes the importance of being in service.

Written in 6-7-6 syllable structure, this haiku is inspired by the 2nd principle of Kwanzaa: Kujichagulia

In line with this principle, being in service to those with whom you are in accordance is most beneficial. To love others, one must first love oneself. You must work to find your own light so that it may help reveal the way for others to find and shine theirs.

Kujichagulia, which means self-determination, demands that we as an African people define, defend and develop ourselves instead of allowing or encouraging others to do so.

Those with ‘knowing’ must do

The way has been shown; stay true

We are the chosen few
