Keeping Kwanzaa: A Haiku Series

Today’s haiku format highlights the number 3.

In numerology, number 3 represents creativity, self-expression, and optimism. It encourages curiosity and enthusiasm in ways that promote a lively outlook on life while finding joy in the present moment.

Written in 3-7-3 syllable structure, this haiku is inspired by the 5th principle of Kwanzaa: Nia

In line with the principle of Nia, in numerology the number 3 represents an energy of tapping into one's superpowers. It reminds us that we are born of both human and divine purpose and that our role is not to remain idle in our existence but to grow and make a difference. The number 3 prompts us to remember that we are the bringers of change. Now is the time to get busy fulfilling our dreams and goals.

The number 3 is also a sign that good things are coming. In the midst of confusion or uncertainty, it curates the union of mind, body, and spirit; illuminating the importance of finding balance. Considered to be the number of the divine, harmony, wisdom, and understanding, the number 3 symbolizes divine intervention which enables us to move confidently in our purpose knowing we are supported in finding wholeness in our exploration toward true happiness and freedom.

Nia, which means purpose, is foundational in the development of a healthy and happy life as well as the development of a strong conscious community. Literally meaning ‘the reason for which something is created or exists’, Nia speaks to ‘ why’ we must restore ourselves and our people to cultural greatness. As a nation, Black people have been indoctrinated to believe false narratives about who they are, what they stand on, and what they are here to do. This has diminished our living legacy and has limited our progression toward understanding our ordained distinction. Nia reminds us that it is our priority to restore our consciousness by seeking, learning and teaching the truth of our unmatched archive of accomplishments, causing us to develop and defend our community, its culture and ‘our story’ in order to regain our initiative and greatness.

As the heirs and custodians of an extraordinary civilization, we have a substantial generational responsibility. Our obligation to those who we birth and raise up in such a confounding society must be prioritized by our actions and commitment to personal and social purpose. Nia as a principle, poses to everyone the introspective questions, ‘Where am I going’? and ‘What am I trying to do’? Having a greater sense of purpose in life shapes who you are becoming and the impact you will have. In this way, personal purpose is social purpose and being proactive in attaining one's own goals can cause great social collective progress as a whole.
